The International Music Festival „Janáček May“ has been developing the rich musical traditions which have formed a special part of industrial Ostrava's profile since 1921. Due to the festival, the line of modern dramatics, guest performances of forefront composers and artists continues. Ostrava has a large symphony orchestra (The Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava), an opera (The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre), the world renowned Janáček Chamber Orchestra and a whole range of excellent musicians, which – along with suitable concert auditoriums – create good conditions for the realisation of demanding festival programs.
Today, at the turning point of May and June, Janáček May, the founder member of the Association of Music Festivals of the Czech Republic and since 1997 a member of the European Festival Association, is one of the biggest musical holidays in the Czech Republic. The programme of the festival includes symphonic and chamber concerts and a jazz weekend. This year´s programmes on the theme „Czech music and the world“ will be devoted mainly to vocal-instrumental music.
Among soloists you will find pianists Gerhard Oppitz, Igor Ardašev and Jan Simon. Violinists are represented by Ilya Gringolts, Ivan Ženatý and Bohuslav Matoušek. At the top of the whole line of singers are Eva Urbanová and Gabriela Beňačková. The best Czech choirs will appear in our festival programmes: Czech Philharmonic Chorus of Brno, Moravian Teachers´ Choral Society, Kühn´s Mixed Chlor or Choir of the Janáček Opera Brno. Besides big Moravian symphony orchestras, renowned chamber ensembles are invited – The Prague Philharmonic, Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic, European Union Chamber Orchestra, Janáček Chamber Orchestra and Stamic, Kubín, Moravan and Belcea Quartets.
